Experimental Study on Plunge Point of Saline Density Current in the Open Channels
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 10
Abstract
Massive amounts of sediments from river floods enter into reservoirs and lakes annually, leading to reduce the effective lifetime of the dam. Density current is one of the most important factor in the sediments transport. When density current enters a fixed reservoir with lower density, inflow displaces the surrounding water until the forces reach equilibrium. At this point, the current with higher density sinks below the ambient water. Penetration point is called plunge point. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory on a physical model to investigate plunge point depth. The study was conducted in 32 experiments. The experiments were conducted on the slopes of 1/50, 1/60, 1/125 and 1/175 with a concentration of 3.5, 4.5, 7 and 8.5 gr/l and in certain flow rates. The results showed that the slopes have effects on the plunge point depth. The greater flow rate with certain density , the greater plunge point height. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the plunge point depth and current characteristics. Since the slopes have effects on the results, we proposed a relation for slopes of 1/50 and 1/60 and another for 1/125 and 1/175.
