Face mask in orthodontic treatment - three case studies
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 4
Abstract
Face mask is an extra-oral device, which has been used in orthodontic treatment for many years. This mask has been constructed in 1968 by Delaire and is still used in treating mesiocclusions such as class III malocclusion and pseudomesio-occlusion, resulting from underdeveloped anterior jaw segment (clefts, lacking foundations of lateral incision teeth). It is utilized both in patients with deciduous teeth, mixed dentition and permanent teeth. The aim of the thesis was to present how the mask acts, depending on the age of the patient, in the course of treating mesiocclusions – pseudo-mesio-occlusion. In the three presented cases the therapy was based on fixed appliance and face mask. The utilized method of orthodontic treatment in case of a patient with deciduous teeth, mixed dentition or permanent teeth resulted not only in improvement of occlusal conditions, but also lead to positive changes within facial aesthetics. Skeletal lesions were mainly caused by activation of maxillary growth and shift to the front, and analysis of metric features revealed an increase within the scope of the SNA and ANB angles, and these changes were more significant in patients with deciduous and mixed teeth. What concerns dental changes, they were mainly related with inclination of incisor teeth to the front, which resulted in change of 1/NS, 1/ML and 1/1 angles within the scope of metric features’ analysis. The use of segmental brackets or full brackets as well as facemask therapy results in changes of the values of skeletal and dental angles as well as leads to regular overbite and overjet due to the orthopaedic and orthodontic effects of a facemask. These changes, however, are dependent upon the stage of patient development at which the therapy is initiated. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 183 - 95). Received: 30.06.2012 Accepted: 30.11.2012
