FACE TO FACE WITH THE WHOLE WORLD: HOW TO MENTALLY PREPARE THE TEAM FOR THE OLYMPICS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 3
Abstract
The aim of the workshop was to call attention of coaches to the role of psychological factors in building and leading successful sport teams. Efficient participation in the “Beijing 2008” Olympic Games poses currently a great challenge to leaders of national teams, because it has been a long time since Polish Olympians achieved team successes (one gold and two silver medals in football – Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Barcelona 1992; a gold medal in volleyball – Montreal 1976; two bronze medals in woman’s volleyball – Tokio 1964 and Mexico 1969; a bronze medal in handball – Montreal 1976). Olympic Games are distinguished from other great competitions i.e. World Cups or Championships by specific type of pressure, built on social (national) pressure for success directed towards competitors and coaches, the highest prestige of Olympians, extremely high level of competition in the environment of countries belonging to IOC, omnipresence of mass-media, etc. In experts opinion, and the Author’s personal experiences based on long-lasting cooperation with olympic teams, the key elements of mental preparation programms for Olympic Games are: recognition of psychological structure of sport task, priorities and style of leadership; evaluation and activation of individual and team psychological “reserves”; sharpening of coaching rules and standards (hierarchy of values and ethical norms i.e. fair play); intensifying of team cohesion and friendship (internal norms of cooperation and coexistence); induction of success motivation (coach mental readiness as indispensable condition); building of championship climate (relationships coach – competitors – team concentrated on task), maximalization of routine and game rituals; inspiration of good emotional atmosphere, team’s “chemistry”, (taking profit of positive feelings/moods and management of aggression/anger); identification of “weak” points and stimulation of individual risk taking abilities; management of time and environment (private-public territory; area of personal freedom); keeping up enthusiasm and ,,hunger for competition”; refining skills of constructive cooperation with mass-media.
