Father’s Age at Births
Journal Title: Демографія та соціальна економіка - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue
Abstract
In Ukraine the characteristics of fathers at birth, in particular their age, are the least studied in the socio-demographic context. At the same time, in our country for quite a long time, the statistics service developed statistic form of the distribution of newborns by age of mother and father. Although this statistic information requires significant deepening and improving, it can be involved in the analysis of fertility. Improving statistic data about father’s age at birth will make them valuable tools for demographic research and allow better understanding of the processes and trends in the field of fertility. The father’s mean age at childbirth in Ukraine is lower than in most developed European countries, but the growth rate of mean age at childbirth is more. Fertility rates by age of father in Ukraine differ significantly from such rates in European countries. In Ukraine, men aged 25–29 years are the most childbearing active group, while in most European countries, the highest fertility rates belong to men aged 30–34 years. Given the prevalence trends of raise of father’s mean age at childbirth and medical evidence of undesirable impact of the trend for parenthood at an older age on children health, the research relevance of age characteristics of parents will grow.
