Feasibility of using waste alcohols including ethylene glycol and glycerol in direct fuel cells

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2011, Vol 65, Issue 10

Abstract

Fuel cells might operate with much higher energy efficiency than any thermal engines and if it is only feasible, waste alcohols, including ethylene glycol from antifreeze and glycerol from biodiesel production should be used in direct fuel cells. However, platinum has to be replaced by less expensive materials as the anode catalyst for these purposes. Cobalt porphyrin was found to be active in the oxidation of higher alcohols in their neat form, and ethylene glycol and glycerol in dimethylformamide solution. The process occurs at the potential of porhyrin ring oxidation, even less anodic than on bulk platinum electrode.
