Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 15
Abstract
It would not be wrong to say that the most important area of the Classical Turkish poetry, which has a comprehensive source utilizing a great many elements regarding Islam in particular besides other religions and beliefs, which has been exemplified with almost all of its materials is Diwans, especially gazels (lyrics) and kasides (odes). When this is the case, all types of materials, legends, fables, beliefs, historical events will take their place as important elements in continuing and transferring a tradition for the poet who endeavours on the way to reach excellence. The aim of the poet is not only to continue the tradition, but also to endeavour to achieve the most beautiful utterance as well as to express oneself in the most accurate and excellent way. From this point of view, it is necessary that the poet knows about all the materials belonging to the geography -whether real or not- in which he exists, the nation he belongs to, and even elements that belong to other nations at a level to use them appropriately. As a matter of fact, it is essential that his interlocutor be aware, to a certain extent, of this material which the poet uses while creating his work. In classical poetry, one of these materials that generally exist in the common fables, stories and legends of Eastern-Islamic culture but at the same time used as an element of reference and simile in diwans is figures. To that end, beside characters of masnavis like Leyla, Şîrîn and Azrâ the features of religious female figures like Meryem, Hacer, Belkıs, Züleyhâ and legendary female figures like Kaydâfe and Zühre and their reflection in poetry through related anecdotes are discussed in the present study.
