Fibrous dysplasia of the maxillofacial bones – own observation

Abstract
Introduction: Fibrous dysplasia is a chronic disease which was firstdescribedbyLichtensteinandJaffein 1938. It may affect any bone in the human body predominantly in the early age. In facial bones it occurs both in the maxilla and the mandible resulting in tumour-like deformations.Aim of the study: To outline the symptoms and treatment strategy regarding patients with fibrousdysplasia on the basis of literature and own experience.Material and methods: Observations were made on the basis of medical documentation of 11 patients with diagnosed facial dysplasia treated in the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of District Specialist Hospital in Rzeszów between 1991 and 2009. The retrospective analysis included the patients’ age, gender, the site of the lesion, clinical manifestations, accessory examinations and the applied treatment methods.Conclusion: In every case, pharmacological and conservative treatment was performer chich was individually applied following the verificationofthe prognostic factors regarding age of patients, localization and progression of the disease and its clinical course.
