FIGHTING SILESIA 1939 -1945

Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2009, Vol 151, Issue 1

Abstract

Owing to its economic potential, Silesia was one of the most significant regions in Poland. When Germany was preparing its plan to attack Poland, it was conscious of the importance Silesia had to Poland. Patriotic traditions were especially strong there. Young people were brought up by their fathers and grandfathers – insurgents. Silesia was annexed by the German Reich. Mass terror ensued. The victims of the oppression were former Silesian insurgents. From the very beginning the structures of the Polish Underground State began to emerge. In 1940 Józef Korol became the head of ZWZ-AK. A bloody but victorious fight started with the aim of retaining Polish Silesia.
