FIGURES OF SUBSTITUTION RENDERING IN THE PROCESS OF LITERARY TRANSLATION
Journal Title: Записки з романо-германської філології - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue
Abstract
The article is devoted to identification and determination of various figures of substitution in the conversational style and transformations, used in their rendering into Ukrainian. The research has been done on the basis of the detective stories “Nemesis”, “Body in the library”, “A Caribbean mystery” by Agatha Christie translation into Ukrainian made by V. Musiienko, V. Khazin, V. Shovkun. There are various stylistic means in literature, which give an expressive-emotional colouring. They attract readers’ attention and involve them in reading. The need to transfer the images raises a number of difficulties that the translator faces. The practical part of the research involves the examples of figures of substitution usage in the conversation style of A. Christie’s characters and ways of their translation. The detective stories are full of examples of using such stylistic devices as a metaphor and epithet. In general, metaphors are translated into the Ukrainian language as follows: by a dictionary analogue, by a metaphorical word with the other image, by a non-metaphoric word with the loss of imagery. In most cases, the epithets were translated by adjectives, word-combinations and descriptive translation, and nouns. The translators use a huge variety of different transformations translating the figures of substitution in the characters’ conversation. They are synonymous substitution, contextual substitution, comprеssion, expressivation, negativation, transposition, permutation, decompression. Practically it was proved that translation process isn’t a simple replacement of units of one language with units of the other language. On the contrary, it is a difficult process including a number of difficulties which the translator needs to overcome.
