“Foreign Land Searching for a Homeland”: A Study on Food Elements in Âşık Mürsel Sinan's Poems

Abstract

Minstrel Mürsel Sinan Uğursu, born on March 5, 1956 in Dikme village of Kars, has an important place in today's minstrel tradition. Mürsel Sinan, who learned the tradition during Murat Çobanoğlu's apprenticeship, frequently dealt with the themes of love, human love, unity and homelessness in his poems. The lover who left Kars at the age of twenty-two and settled in Istanbul, He used the geographical and cultural elements of Kars in his poems in accordance with the dialect characteristics of the region. Mürsel Sinan's poems, which are the subject of our study, are taken from Seyfettin Gelekçi's master's thesis on mistrel. In addition, interviews were conducted with the minstrel for information on the use of food elements in the poems. In some of the analyzed poems of the minstrel, it has been seen that expatriate, being abroad and longing for home are matched with the food culture of the region. In our study, based on the fact that taste and smell are a powerful stimulant that activates the human memory, the poems used by the lover in this context have been determined. It is emphasized that the poems in question are reminders of the years the lover lived in Kars.
