FORMS OF REPRESENTATION AND WAYS OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL BODILY STRATUM IN POSTMODERN LITERATURE (BASED ON THE TEXTS BY Y. VYNNYCHUK AND M. GRETKOVSKA)
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2016, Vol 271, Issue 259
Abstract
Postmodern literature in the former Soviet Union appeals to the marginal realities of the previous colonial life, opposing it to the abstract aesthetics of socialist ideals. The grotesque body, its bowel movements, sexual activity and their representations were forbidden in Soviet literature. The article presents some important parallels between the traditions of the human body representation in the carnival culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (as presented by M. Bakhtin in his famous work devoted to the carnival aspect of the Medieval culture) and the ways to make artistic reality carnival in Ukrainian and Polish postmodern prose texts. In the texts under analysis corporality plays a very important role though in different ways. Both Y. Vynnychuk’s «Malva Landa» and M. Gretkovska’s «Metaphysical cabaret» are based on the ambivalent opposition of the two beginnings of carnival reality (utopian-symbolic and material-corporal). These works offer different forms of grotesque realism as a conceptual principle of the human body representation. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the world of M. Gretkovska’s work due to its abstract, metaphoric- symbolic corporality differs greatly from Y. Vynnychuk’s fictional reality full of direct corporality.
