Frame patterns of affixed adjectives in English economic terminology

Abstract

The article considers frame patterns of affixed adjectives used as English economic terms. The investigation of English economic terminology in the mainstream of cognitive linguistics makes it possible to identify relations between lexical units and combine them into patterns. Patterns constituting some links are represented in mind by frames. The aim of the research is to identify peculiarities of frame patterns of affixed adjectives used as English economic terms. To achieve this aim, (i) the types of frame patterns of adjectives were described; (ii) the relationship between the type of a frame and an affix was determined. Frames are defined as units of knowledge which are stored in memory and form the conceptual structure of linguistic and extra-linguistic experience. Frames are distinguished according to the classification of Svitlana Zhabotynska. The research shows that affixed adjectives are correlated with thing, action, possession, and comparison types of frames. The thing frame arranges information about the inherent properties of a thing (SOMEBODY or SOMETHING). It is represented in English economic terminology by both suffixed (with suffixes -less, -ous, -ed, -ate, -y, -ly, -ent (-ant), -ive, -ful, -or, -al, -ic) and prefixed (with prefixes a-, anti-, in- (il-, ir-, im-), extra-, inter-, multi-, out-, over-, non-, sub-, bio-, con-, post-, pre-, super-, trans-, uni-, up-, under-, un-) adjectives. The action frame contains doing schemas that include SOMEBODY or SOMETHING – the doer of an action, and the action itself. Affixed economic terms of this frame are represented by adjectives with suffixes -able, -ed, -ous, -ary (-ory), -ent (-ant), -ive, -ful and prefixes ex-, over-, up-, non-, in- (il-, ir-, im-). The possession frame includes the generalized role of the possessor. Some adjectives with suffixes sub- та semi- of this frame are revealed among English economic terms. The comparison frame is constituted by the comparison schemas of identity, similarity, and likeness where the link undergoes modifications. It is represented by a number of adjectives with suffixes -y, -like, -ish, -ous, -ile, -like, -ar (-or), -ate. Thus, the research demonstrates that each type of frame correlates with a certain adjective suffix or prefix. The promising area of future research will be to identify frames correlating with different parts of speech in professional terminology and to study frames in discourse.
