Franciszek Wężyk – Edward Lubomirski. Prolegomena do dziejów preromantycznego synkretyzmu literackiego
Journal Title: Wiek XIX. Rocznik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. Adama Mickiewicza - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
The article discusses the birth of Polish pre-Romanticism. What comes under scrutiny is this part of Polish literary history when there appeared various “cracks and fissures” within an apparently monolithic model of literature and fine arts (the model, let us add, based on the tenets of French Enlightenment). The “cracks and fissures” assumed the form of exceptionally expansive elements of “strange” (i.e. other than those officially approved of) philosophies and “strange” artistic ideas. Accordingly, the article attempts to locate the ideas of Edward Lubomirski (1796–1823) contained in his Introduction to August Ernst Friedrich Klingemann’s Faust (which Lubomirski himself rendered into Polish in 1819) within the Polish historical and literary context. Both the Introduction and the text of Faust (in a bilingual version) were re-published in Białystok in 2013.
