FROM ONE LIFE TO ANOTHER: THE JOURNEY OF THE HEART IN THE NOVEL MEND THE LIVING BY MAYLIS DE KERANGAL
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 51
Abstract
In her novel Mend the Living, Maylis de Kerangal constructs the narration upon the testimony of the people who are around a 20-year-old victim of an accident. The narrator speaks of Simon’s relatives, in the meantime, he/she lifts the lid on the mechanics of the health sector. T The processes from life to death and death to life are narrated by focusing on the events experienced by the donors and the receivers. The common ground that the characters meet is the body of Simon Limbres. Although Simon is in the center of the narration, the narrator forms the structure of the novel by reciting the events taking place around him. The aim of this study is to examine the placement of the characters in the main narration, and the relation between narrative elements and the fiction of the novel. This paper discusses the creation of a dynamic structure through the use of constantly changing viewpoints, dilemmas and contradictions experienced by the characters, the continuous movement between past and present in narration, and the life of the protagonist that goes from private to public and then to anonymity.
