Abstract
The article deals with the phenomenon of deixis and the functions of deictic markers in English visual graphic text. On the basis of “Captain America” comic book, the author highlights three types of deixis: personal, spatial and temporal, and their peculiarities. In the article, the author highlights the significance of deixis in linguistics and the functioning of deictic markers in the process of perceiving the information while reading the comic book. The value of deixis is coded in the fact that it is impossible to establish communication without the existence of deictic elements, because any communication process is carried only with the reference to the person (subject), time and space. Personal deixis is used to describe the relationship between the speaker (or the author) and the addressee. The function of personal deixis is to emphasize the “existence of a particular object at a certain time and in a certain place.” Personal pronouns comprise the most common group of deictic operators to highlight the object or subject. Spatial deixis serves as an indication of a certain place concerning a particular point of reference. This type of deixis is used to put an emphasis on a particular place concerning a precise point of reference. Spatial reference is considered from the perspectives of physical environment, sociocultural and psychological world. The third type of deixis, temporal, sets the certain time or period of action. The markers of temporal deixis include the units that denote the time describing the existence of phenomena and objects from a particular point of reference.
