Gabriella Morreale, The Italian-Spanish Chemist who Introduced the Heel Prick Test in Newborns

Abstract

This article shows the biography of a woman, Gabriella Morreale, born in Italy but nationalized Spanish for having lived since she was eleven years old and having developed her brilliant work in that country, to whom many merits are owed because of the important discoveries that she did in her professional activity as a graduate and doctorate in Chemistry. Among its milestones are the introduction of the heel prick test, a clinical test for the early detection of congenital metabolic diseases, and her studies on iodine deficiency, especially serious among the youngest, because it can cause brain damage. The main objective is to remember her figure and put her as a reference to society. The methodology followed has been the usual one in this type of works, the search in mainly primary sources of data about her life and the importance of her scientific research.
