Gender Equality in Ukraine: the Need of Reinterpretation of the Approach towards Understanding

Abstract

The article focuses on the need for researchers to change the approach towards understanding the gender equality and deprivation of gender stereotypes. It is noted that the issue of gender equality has become particularly relevant. Despite the length of the struggle of women for their rights even to this day, this issue remains unresolved. The abovementioned thematics is extremely relevant for the Ukrainian state given the proclamation in 1996 in the Constitution of Ukraine the principle of equality of rights regardless of gender, and also taking into account the public perception of a woman, primarily as “guardian of the kin”, and not as an equal partner of her husband. The domestic legislation and international acts in the field of gender equality are analyzed. Statistics on gender-based violence are provided. The emphasis is on the lack of understanding by the public authorities (including local self-government) of the need for provision of gender equality. It is noted that Ukrainian society, like others, has a number of stereotypes that have been formed for many years. One example among them is the situation of a man and a woman in society, their rights and responsibilities. It is this stereotype that has formed an urgent problem of the present – gender equality. It is noted that the young generation of Ukrainians will finally be able to abandon gender stereotypes and solve the problem of equality between a man and a woman. Although this is not a simple and fast process, it has already begun. Subsequently, taking into account the active discussion on the introduction of gender quotas, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will be replenished with ambitious and confident women, which will allow a qualitative improvement of the situation with gender equality
