GENDER QUOTAS IN MANAGEMENT BOARDS – REVIEW OF EU AND NATIONAL LEGAL SOLUTIONS

Abstract

Gender equality means that women and men are treated fairly in every area of social life. Currently women’s participation in management boards worldwide accounts for just over 9% (needless to say, management boards are an area where important decisions, often concerning more than one country are taken). So, similarly to gender quotas in politics quota regulations have been introduced also in management boards in order to increase women’s participation. The aim is to reduce the “gender gap” in decision-making bodies in economics. For the purposes of this paper the quota rules in management boards in EU Member States have been analysed. However, the research was based on EU law with particular regard of the proposal of the Directive European Parliament and of The Council on improving the gender balance among non-executive directors of companies listed on stock exchanges and related measures.
