GENES AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

During the last decades physical actMty has been rather an occasional event than a part of our everyday life. For example, 25% of Americans lead a sedentary lifestyle. Abo-ut 10% of health-care system costs are due to the increasing prevalence of circulatory di-seases caused by Iow level of physical actMty and obesity There are several kinds of phy¬sical actMty: spontaneous physical actMty (associated with daily life), obligatory physical actMty (life conditioning), voluntary physical actMty (occasional, e. g. exercises). In eve-ry population there are indMduals with high, medium and Iow spontaneous physical acti-vity. Importantly spontaneous physical actMty directly modulates body fat level, and it de-pends not only on the environment but also on genetic factors. For example, it is a well known fact that the body mass of people with Glu polymorphism in the position at 27 of the adrenergic (52 receptor does not independ on daily physical actMty. Last year, the papers reported that many other metabolic genes could influence body mass and physical actMty, ex. composition of the Adrenergic (53 receptor and pPAR me-lanocortin receptor. Dopamine, serotonin and melanocortin receptors can influence the physical actMty propensity Those facts are often taken advantage of, not only for health reasons (elements of daily exercises, dietary composition) but also for gene doping.
