Genetics in periodontics: An overview

Abstract
Periodontal disease was earlier believes to be a single disease with variations in clinical symptoms. However, extensive researches over a long period of time have now established that periodontitis is actually a multifactorial and a bidirectional disease with genetic predisposition to it playing an intergral role. Hence, it is important to consider known risk factors for periodontal disease when focussing on familial clustering or possible genetic mechanisms, as many risk factors for periodontal disease tend to cluster in families through genetic or culture mechanism.. Identification of such genes could enable clinicians better to identify high-risk individuals for targeted prevention and treatment. The more susceptibility factors an individual has inherited, the greater the genetic predisposition and the higher the chance for early development of periodontitis. Hence, this review focuses on the detailed interplay between genes and periodontitis to provide a better understanding for the same.
