Genghizids in Miniatures of the Illustrated Chronicle of Ivan the Terrible
Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue 24
Abstract
The article analyses the series of miniatures of the Illustrated Chronicle of Ivan the Terrible, the multi-volume creation of the Medieval Russian book-lore. The considered miniatures show activities of the representatives of the Genghizid dynasty. Compositions published in the article present the images of Batu-khan; the future Great Khan Munghe; the rulers of the Golden Horde khans Tokhta (Taktamir) and Nogai; the “tsarina” Fatma-Saltan, the wife of the well-known courtesan of Ivan the Terrible, Shah-Ali (Shigaley), who occupied thrones of Kazan and Kasimov (Khankirman). The miniatures reflect the ideas of Muscovite high officials (the Tsar's courtesans) and also that of painters, which illuminated the manuscript on the Mongol invasion, power of Khans of the Golden Horde and also the etiquette used at the court of the Sovereigns of the whole of Russia during receptions of the Genghizid dynasty persons. Great number of miniatures of the Chronicle makes the compositions devoted to the history of the Golden Horde and the Tatar nation an important and perspective historical source.
