GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHES OF DEPARTMENT PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY AND NATURE MANAGEMENT ODESSA NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The article considers the place and role of GIS and geoinformation technologies in the research of Department of Physical Geography and Nature Management of Odessa National I. I. Mechnikov University, starting from the beginning of the 90s of the last century The aim of this paper is characteristic of the main areas of research related to geographic information systems and technologies, the evaluation of the results obtained for the more than 20-year period, and modern trends in the development of this direction of research at the Department. Publications faculty and staff of the Department on the subject, including reports at scientific conferences at various levels, articles in national and international scientific journals, monographs, reports on the research projects, dissertations, as well as personal memories of the author used when preparation the article. Methodological basis of research was the problem-chronological and analytical-synthetic methods of research. The research resulted in identified the following main directions of scientific research related to geographic information systems and technologies: 1) the development of the scientific basis for the use of GIS to support environmental management and in the first place – the use of land and water resources, 2) the development of principles and methods of agro-ecological monitoring, 3) the use of geographic information technologies for automated zoning and mapping agrolandscape systems and spatial realization of mathematical models of energy-mass transfer in natural and natural-economic territorial systems, including mathematical models of water soil erosion, as well as studies of coastal zone of the Black Sea and Black Sea estuaries. The periodization of theoretical and applied geoinformation researches on the Department was made. The current trends of these research and communication of geographic information researches and educational process was shown.
