GEOTEXTILES AS MATERIALS PROTECTING AGAINST DUSTING FROM AN ASH STORAGE YARD

Abstract
Dusting on industrial waste storage yards, in that yards for storing ash from thermal-electric power plants, is a serious ecological problem, especially when the storage yards are close to housing areas or urban centers. Therefore, stabilization by various methods of the surface of such waste yards is being attempted at since many years. The surfaces were covered by turf, sand and humus and next grass was sown. Also a special method of recultivation was used, the so called hydrosowing. The high cost of the above methods inspired search for new, cheaper solutions which would allow quick and ecologically safe stabilization. One of such solutions is the production of a new geotextile called GEOLENTEX, which, when spread out at the storage yard stabilizes the dust immediately, and in a short time produces a green matt of vegetation which protects, in a permanent way, against dusting. The paper describes the investigations which led to the development of the GEOLENTEX, and the results obtained with using this material for protecting ash storage yards near Gdansk.
