Global history and local prostitution: Modern prostitution in Buenos Aires (1880-1930)

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 11

Abstract

This article explores the history of prostitution in Buenos Aires in the turn from the nine-teenth to the twentieth century. Unlike other studies of the same topic, this paper states that prostitution became a widespread phenomenon in the city during this period to an extent that had no precedents. In late nineteenth century Buenos Aires demograpic explosion re-lated to the modern transport revolution and mass migration led to a gender imbalance pop-ulation. A large number of single men arrived to the city during this era and demanded sex in exchange for money. The cultural and socio-economic change described in this article for Buenos Aires was not particular to this city but, on the contrary, it constituted a global trend affecting a large number of cities between 1850 and 1950.
