Gustaw Daniłowski – zapomniany pionier nowoczesnego polskiego reportażu wojennego
Journal Title: Naukowy Przegląd Dziennikarski - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 4
Abstract
World War I (1914-1918) and the Polish-Soviet War (1919-1920) became the stimulator of development of the Polish literature of fact and editorial commentary, and particularly the modern Polish war reportage. Although a reportage by J. Kaden-Bandrowski (1915) is usually considered to be the first such work, the real pioneer of this genre was G. Daniłowski (1871- 1927), a forgotten neoromantic writer and legionnaire, a chronicler and member of the headquarters of 1th Infantry Legion Regiment, who, already in the end of August 1914, published in the Kraków daily "New Reform" an extensive and dynamic relation concerning the first legions' victorious skirmishes, which resulted in the liberation of Kielce from the Russian occupation ("The First Battles"). Daniłowski is also the author of a series of various journalistic texts presenting (from his own experience) not only battles but also the backstage of war (training, propaganda, and recruitment actions). An interesting thread is the participation of Daniłowski in documentation as well as creation of the legend of Commandant Józef Piłsudski, the architect of Poland's revival in World War I.
