Abstract

The hamartoma of the breast is a rare benign lesion, comprising a variable amount of glandular, adipose and fibrous tissue. This tumor affects the woman at any age from puberty. The diagnosis is mainly mammographic with histological confirmation. We report the case of a 28-year-old woman with a history of food allergy and a left breast mass. The mammogram shows a lesional mass of about 3.7 cm evoking a hamartomatous lesion classified BIRADS III. A surgical excision was performed whose histological analysis confirms the hamartomatous nature of the lesion. This tumor has been described for the first time by Arrigoni et al. in 1971. The reported incidence of this anomaly in the literature varies between 0.1 and 0.7% of all benign breast tumors. The diagnosis of hamartoma is mainly mammographic in front of a well-limited mass with a partially fatty content, sometimes with calcifications giving a \"breast in breast\" or \"sausage slice\" appearance. Histologically, the characteristic aspect is that of a combination of a fatty tissue with a normal glandular tissue producing nodular formations within a fibrous stroma that surrounds the mass and creeps between the lobules. The presence of normal breast tissue in the hamartoma makes possible the development of cancer within the hamartoma. In conclusion, the diagnosis of breast hamartoma is generally easy in its typical form. Mammography alone is sufficient to make the diagnosis, avoiding a biopsy or systematic surgical excision.
