HARDINESS OF MEDICAL STUDENTS IN A SITUATION OF UNCERTAINTY
Journal Title: Profesinės Studijos: Teorija ir Praktika - Year 2010, Vol 7, Issue 7
Abstract
The aim of the research was to study a relationship of hardiness and ambiguity tolerance among medical department students. The research was conducted in a Latvian State higher educational institution among students of the medical department. The sample group consisted of 72 participants. The author used S. Badner’s Tolerance Ambiguity Scale (TAS) adapted by G. A. Soldatova and The Personal Views Survey III – R, 2001 – 2003 designed by S. Maddi and adapted by J. Shaplavska and I. Plotka (2008). The Personal Views Survey III – R is used for the diagnostics of individual level of ability to successful actions in complicated and stressful situations and includes three scales congruent to the three components of hardiness, according to S. Maddi’s theory: involvement (attitude to participate in actual events), control (attitude to influence actual events) and risk acceptance (attitude to accept ambiguous situations and act in them). The research results showed the correlation between hardiness and tolerance to novelty, risk acceptance and general index of the tolerance to ambiguity. In general, the research showed that hardiness can determine readiness and willingness to decide complicated, unknown problems and to act under the ambiguous circumstances. It helps to cope with anxiety which usually accompanies the choice of the new future (the uncertainty), instead of the past (the constancy). The acquired results could evidence that those people who are ready to act in the new, uncertain situations more actively participate in actual life, ready to learn on their own mistakes and to get a positive experience. At the same time they aim to control the events and always obtain the most objective information. On the opposite, people who aim to avoid the changes in their life are less involved in the actual life, considering it being out of their control and percepting failures heavier. Exposed correlations show that indices of hardiness and ambiguity tolerance could be the indicators of personal potentials of students as future professionals.
