Herman Yehorovych Pauker (1822-1889): life and activity

Abstract

This article deals with the contribution of Professor H. Pauker in preparation national projects in the field of structural mechanics, railway transport and engineering structures in the second half of the XIXth century. The characteristic of H. Pauker’s scientific heritage has been given. And on this basis his role in formation new scientific and technical paradigm in the Russian Empire and afterwards at the turn of millenniums ensured the modernization and development of the country has been determined. H. Pauker’s scientific publications are mostly devoted to the mechanics of military engineering fortifications. He proposed the formula for determining the depth of laying foundations («Pauker’s formula»). He designed forests of original design for carrying out engineering works under the spire reconstruction of Peter and Paul Fortress (1855-1856), metal dome of the Catherine Palace’s church in Tsarskoye Selo (1863-1865). For military technique he proposed the device for lowering the large caliber guns. He built the vault for revolving Pulkov’s telescope – refractor. He continuously collected information about building materials from the Black Sea shores, guided the bottom and shores filming of the Kerch Strait. He participated in the design of Kerch fortifications and the shores of the Black and Baltic Seas, in the construction of Mykolaivskyi bridge across the Neva River, in the works on strengthening Kyiv and Bobruisk. In 1887 he was on a business trip for the purpose on inspection of the Transcaspian railway operation.
