Hippotherapy and Horseback Riding on the Level of Recreation and Sport – Advantages and Disadvantages

Abstract

Horsemanship is seen as a therapeutical sport, very popular is the statement that, thanks to the horse riding people with a problem, for example, with slumping take upright posture, because it is the only way they can keep their balance on a horse. But it is usually forgotten that during the ride on a horse joints, muscles and bone structure of man are very heavily exploited due to overloads that arise when the horse’s movement causes a sudden, unexpected tugs, it puts the rider’s body in severe shock. Purpose of the article: presentation of positive and negative effects brought about by horse riding in the rehabilitation of disabled people, depending on the level of practice of this discipline. These aspects, although they are inseparable, they have been rarely analyzed together, and even more rarely negative effects have been shown. Methods: analysis of literature and existing data from studies of the Central Institute for Labour Protection, Polish Equestrian Federation and researches conducted by McGibbon, Andrade, Widener (1998), Casadi, Nichols-Larsen (2004), Scott (2005), Granados, Agis (2011), Rozmarynowicz, Szark-Eckardt, Mrozkowiak, Zukow (2013), Lisik, Napierała, Pezala, Zukow (2014). Analyses research results confirm that hippotherapy and horse back riding have an important role in the rehabilitation of disabled people, as well as confirm that the level of practicing discipline conditions the number and severity of injuries.
