Historical evolution of the Holy See’s international legal status

Abstract
The article analyzes the main stages of the historical development of the concept of «international legal status» of the Holy See. The author adheres to an integrated understand- ing of the Holy See and the Vatican’s international legal status. The Holy See is the center of the Catholic Church. Vatican – the center of the world’s smallest state. The author seeks to show how the Holy See and Vatican interact within the framework of «atypical» and «typical» concepts of international law. The author’s view of the problem, «the Vatican in international law» consists of a synthesis of historical material and political science, geopolitical, religious concepts. The author also analyzes the principles of the state of the Vatican, the Vatican’s public and private law. History of Vatican law is an important part of the study of the international legal status of the state.
