Hitches of Trypanosomosis in Nigeria from Livestock Production Perspective

Abstract
Trypanosomosis is a debilitating protozoan disease caused by parasites trypanosome, the disease is known to be transmitted through a vector and the mode of transmission is either through the saliva or by fecal contamination of the wound caused by bite of the vector. Consequently tackling trypanosomosis has positive impact on goals of many nations which includes eradication of extreme poverty and boost of livestock production to improve lives of human populace. Although the number of new cases of the human disease appears to be on the decline, while the increased infections in livestock in the tropical Africa was due to limited active surveillance in endemic nations. Limited number of clinical reports on Sleeping Sickness and trypanosomosis of livestock has resulted in poor knowledge of the pathogenesis, clinical evaluation, pathology, prevention and control of human trypanosome infections and livestock trypanosome infection respectively. The important subgroup of the parasites includes Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, T. b. gambiense, causative agents of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) also known as Sleeping Sickness., and T. b. brucei, causative agent of Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) also described as Nagana. The disease share common similarities no clinical signs, epizootiology, pathogenesis and pathological features. The aim of this review is to give update on the common findings particularly, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, preventive and pathology of T. brucei subspecie of zoonotic importance, in view to enhanced knowledge and control of African trypanosomosis for effective livestock production in the developing countries.
