Honor as A Cause of Antagonism Between the Turkish Immigrants And Swedes: The Examples of Uppsala and Stockholm

Journal Title: Moment Dergi - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

The concept of honor and honor killings continue to exist and be readapted to diverse patriarchal structures both in Turkey and other European countries. The practice of honor killings and the norm of honor erect walls between Western and Eastern cultures and support the ethnocentric discourse nourished by differences in gender regimes. This study is based on a review of feminist literature on honor and honor killings, a theoretical discussion on multiculturalism and intercultural communication, and 30 in-depth interviews conducted in Stockholm and Uppsala. This study claims that Turkish immigrants living in Sweden protect their perception of honor and that this perception has undesirable effects on communication between these immigrants and Swedes, despite the semantic and functional transformation of honor as a result of migration and multiculturalism
