HOW DANGEROUS IS BISPHENOL A? FINAL CONCLUSIONS OF THE EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITY (EFSA)

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound mainly used as a monomer in the manufacture of polycarbonate – a kind of highly transparent durable plastics, which is used to make some types of food and drink containers. Trace amounts of BPA can enter the food through food containers or packages, as a result of this it can be swallowed by human beings. Bisphenol À is considered to be “endocrine disruptor” with a mechanism of action as xenoestrogen, due to which BPA is still of great interest during the last years. More than 400 articles have discussed monthly (as in most cases there are doubts) its safety. The European Commission established the use of BPA in the manufacturing of feeding bottles for infants and the launch of polycarbonate infants feeding bottles to the market to be temporarily banned until receiving additional scientific data that will clarify the toxicological significance of some observed effects of BPA, in particular, for the biochemical changes in the brain, immunomodulatory effects and increased predisposition to the development of breast cancer.
