Human sustainable development from UNDP perspective: challenges to putting the ideal into practice
Journal Title: Conjuntura Austral: journal of the Global South - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 49
Abstract
This article is an unfolding of a more extensive research conducted as a master thesis and intends to propose an analysis of the main strategies presented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in its annual Human Development Reports (HDRs) for the promotion of the development model structured by the Program itself. Given the relevance of the discussions related to development in the contemporary multilateral agenda, the article aims to offer an insight on the treatment given to this topic in the UNDP and, through a more extensive analysis of the HDRs, evaluate the existence of possible friction points between the theoretical and conceptual principles that shape the Program’s discourse and the means advanced in the Reports to promote this ideal of a more human and sustainable development. The results point to the existence of a few limiting aspects encompassing different dimensions, such as the undermining of country-ownership and the lack of clarity in the definition of the preferable state profile, while presenting the critical insights offered by the post-development thinking.
