Immigrants, refugees, outlaw? Semantic-value ambiguity of the IDP status in the Ukrainian mass consciousness

Abstract

The main objectives of the study are the analysis of the distorted trends of the IDP image in the morden Ukrainian mass consciousness. IDP іmage changes are interpreted as transformations of the Ukrainian meanings and values. The analysis shows, the mythologization and the framing are the most suitable semantic operations that use Ukrainian political discourse and mass media. The analysis was carried out on the material of media texts about internally displaced persons, texts of the IDP self-identification, sociological research and media texts about IDP Adventure social game. According to the developers of the game, IDP Adventure ≪was developed to raise awareness about the practical issues that IDPs face, to help overcome stereotypes, and to disprove the ‘scary tales’about IDPs. This game is a simulated experience of the 1.6 million of our fellow citizens who are IDPs. The raising of awareness among the broad population and representatives of all branches of government about IDP issues with this game will prevent their future discrimination≫. The goal of IDP Adventure was not achieved. The semantic-value ambiguity of the IDP status in Ukrainian society and in the Ukrainian mass consciousness is the main cause of failure. The Ukrainian media discourse combines opposite semantic and values trends. As a result, the IDP status are contradictory and indefinite. Semantic-value ambiguity of the IDP іmage is used by Ukrainian political technologies.
