Impact of air pollutants on encountered plant foliage

Abstract

Vehicular pollution is the by-product of mechanized mobility, which adversely affects both plant and human life. However, plants growing in the urban locations provide a great respite from the automobile exhaust by absorbing the pollutants at their foliar surface. Present study was carried out to assess the impact of automobile exhaust on some selected plant species growing in State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL), a renowned industrial area, Metropolis City Rudrapur and G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. The predominant plant species of the study locations viz. Cannabis sativus, Cassia fistula, Delonix regia, Eucalyptus spp., Helicteres isora, Lagerstroemia spp., Nerium odoratum and Terminalia arjuna were selected as representative species for the study. Chlorophyll, total carotenoids, protein content and lead accumulation in foliar leaves was determined in summer, monsoon and winter season. Significant decrease in total chlorophyll and protein content was observed in leaf samples collected from SIDCUL followed by Metropolis city Rudrapur. However, least impact of air pollutants was recorded in plant leaves collected from University campus. Lead content in plant leaves was highest in winter followed by summer. Monsoon season raveled less impact of air pollution on plants. Based on the observations it is concluded that plants can be used as bio indicators for urban air pollution.
