Implant-supported dentures in rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 4

Abstract

Head and neck cancer patients who underwent ablative surgical suffer from side effects which hamper oral functions. Tissue malformations, bone loss, mucositis, salivary glands disfunction and others lead to severe disturbance of oral functioning. Thanks to the development of surgical techniques including the use of endoosseus implants, dental prosthodontic rehabilitation is considered to be more efficient method of treatment. However, one should be aware of possible complications in surgical treatment in patient who underwent radio- and chemotherapy. Osteoradionecrosis and soft tissue inflammation are risk factors associated with diminished tissue blood circulation. Osteoradionecrosis may develop after the surgical procedure of implant placement. Soft tissue inflammation (mucositis) forming around the implant screws may lead to the treatment failure due to the implant loss. The aim of this review is to evaluate present algorithm for treatment of oncological patients with the use of endoosseus implants.
