Importance of Health Education among Patients with Diabetes
Journal Title: Polish Journal of Public Health - Year 2010, Vol 120, Issue 3
Abstract
Today diabetes is spread across the globe. The number of people suffering from diabetes is not only high but is also increasing in western countries as well as in the developing world. This is the result of changes in lifestyle, a decrease in physical exercise, as well as an increase in the quantity of calories consumed, which may eventually lead to obesity and other problems related to being overweight. The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that by 2025 the total number of diabetics, worldwide is estimated to increase 4 billion people. The number of diabetics is not the only problem. Another is their needs. Nowadays diabetics, apart from medication, need education about their disease and its side effects, as well as self-care in conjunction with selfcontrol, which are crucial to successful therapy. The aim of the present work is to demonstrate the importance of diabetes education and the role of the nurse in the educational-behavioral process in the current population of diabetics. Education is crucial for effective and safe treatment of diabetics and at the same time it is both an indispensable and inseparable element of the treatment process. Tasks carried out by nurses and their occupational functions, including educational functions, demonstrate that nurses are best prepared to carry out the role of diabetic educators. The most important educational aims of nurses are to shape proper healthy behaviour, self-responsibility for their own health and preparing patients for self-care at home. Nurses may improve their knowledge about diabetes through different courses and scientific conferences and from 2006 – at University – specializing in diabetes nursing. Education is an indispensable element in the treatment process of diabetes. Patients with knowledge of diabetes are cooperating with a team of therapists, they understand the aims of the treatment and the most importantly, they hold the essential skill of self-control. This global aim is achievable, thanks to the cooperation of many professionals who have created an interdisciplinary team where an important role is played by the “tutor” who is a nurse – educator.
