In vitro antagonist of Bacillus spp. strains against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense

Abstract
Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a diseases that most affect the plantains and bananas (Musa spp.) cultivation. Until now, the chemical and cultural methods used for its management have been ineffective. However, a promising alternative could be the use of antagonist bacteria. This work had the objective of determining the antagonistic capacity of Bacillus spp. strains against Foc race 1. By means of dual culture, the antagonistic activity of the bacterial strains was determined and quantified, as well as their capacity to produce volatile and diffused antifungal metabolites. Of the 17 strains studied, nine showed antifungal capacity. Among then, one did not produce either diffused or volatile (CCIBP-B4), seven presented diffused metabolites and only one (CCIBP-A5) both types of metabolites. Of all the strains studied, CCIBP-A5 shows the best potential for possible use in Foc race 1 management programs.
