In vitro anti oxidant activity of leaves extracts of Clerodendrum innerme (L.) GAERTN.

Abstract

Present study is focused to evaluate the anti oxidant potential of the plant Clerodendrum innerme [Verbenaceae]. The plant is called as “Dedonia” in regional language of Satpuda ranges of Maharashtra state, India and is actually decorative. Traditional literature and people of revealed that plant posses several therapeutic values such as, it can be used for skin rashes, eye infection, umbilical cord infection and antibacterial and antifungal infection. The present study is focused to identify the new directions of the plant and for that purpose antioxidant activity is selected. The powder of shade dried leaves of the plant was extracted with Chloroform-water and Ethanol using maceration technique. The resultant extracts were evaluated for Anti-oxidant activity by two methods viz. Nitric oxide scavenging activity and Ferric chloride reductive ability. Both extracts has shown significant in vitro anti-oxidant activity compared with ascorbic acid as standard. The ethanolic extract is having highest activity among both extracts.
