Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Climbing is a sport which is growing in popularity. Every year more and more difficult peaks are reached by climbers. This involves special training and causes immense overloads of motor organs of a climber. In consequence, climbers are subjected to large number of injuries and overload syndromes. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency and types of injuries found in climbers as well as to present the most common causes of those injuries.Material and methods. The study involved 43 active climbers, and it was based on a self-prepared anonymous questionnaire.Results. Out of 43 climbers who completed the questionnaire, 67.5 % suffered from at least 1 injury during their sport career caused by climbing training, 39.5 % suffered from injuries of various parts of the body and in 18% the injury recurred in the same place. The most frequent injuries of motor organs described by the climbers were fingers injuries, including fingers 3 and 4 (48% of all the injuries) and injuries of the elbow joint (19.5 of all the injuries). These were mainly soft tissues injuries. The main cause of the injuries described by 79% of the injured competitors was overload of motor organs, resulting from inaproppriate training methods.Conclusions. Sport injuries and overload syndromes were common among the professional climbers who took part in the study. Soft tissues within the hand and the elbow joint were most exposed to injuries.
