INFLUENCE OF AGING ON THE PROPERTIES OF F-T WAX MODIFIED ROADWAY BITUMEN

Journal Title: Structure and Environment - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 2

Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating the impact of short-term and long-term aging on the properties of road bitumen modified with low-viscosity agents. Two types of road bitumen were used as reference binders: 35/50 and PMB 45/80-65. The modifier, Fischer-Tropsch synthetic wax, was added in 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3% increments. The testing programme included the indication of the penetration at 25°C, the Ring and Ball Softening Point and the Fraass Breaking Point. These properties were determined in three phases: prior to aging, after the bitumen had been aged in the short-term aging test, RTFOT, and after the bitumen had been aged in the long-term aging test, PAV. Modification of the bitumen made it stiffer thus increasing the resistance of the bituminous mixture to permanent deformation. The results show that both short-term and long-term aging contributed to increased hardness and brittleness of the binder.
