Influence of environmental and clinical factors on nasal mucociliary clearance of the students of the Medical University of Silesia

Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Mucociliary transport (MCT) plays a fundamental role in the defense and cleansing of the mucous membranes in the nose and paranasal sinuses. The mechanism of this transport makes the lining of the nose and paranasal sinuses constantly covered with a fresh and moist layer of mucus, which is renewed every 10-15 minutes. The transport tends to be impaired in states of inflammatory and allergic rhinitis, such as chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, in the presence of air pollutants and other environmental factors. The aim of study was to evaluate the function of the mucous membrane transport manifested as velocity of the substance used in the study (aspartame) from the vestibule of the nose to oropharynx structures. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on in a group of students (172 females, 49 males) of the Medial University (mean age 22.,18+/-2,.05). Non-variable conditions of temperature and humidity were sustained. Aspartame (pills, 48 mg) was applicatedadministered to the nostril with subsequent measurement of the appearance of the characteristic sweet taste sensations within the structures of the throat and tongue. Results: The average transport time of the active substance for the study group was 22.,77 + / -13.42 minutes, women 21.36 + / -13.24 minutes, men 26.51 + / -12.53 minutes. Conclusion: Extension of transport is directly proportional to the number of cigarettes smoked and duration of smoking. The assessment of mucocilliary clearance is crucial, as its dysfunction may be associated with an increased incidence of chronic diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract in the future, such as chronic sinusitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
