INFLUENCE OF EXERCISE ON SELECTED PARAMETERS OF IRON METABOLISM ON FIELD HOCKEY PLAYERS ORGANISMS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was determination of selected parameters of iron administration in field hockey players' blood during maximal exercise tests.Material and methods. Fifty six professional male hockey players from Poznań Field Hockey Club Background. The aim of the study was determination of selected parameters of iron administration in field hockey players' blood during maximal exercise tests.Material and methods. Fifty six professional male hockey players from Poznań Field Hockey Club (23.4 ± 5.6 years, 73.6 ± 8.8 kg, 178.0 ± 5.6 cm) were tested. During the test on a motorized treadmill, the sportsmen were subjected to the increasing intensity to obtain maximal individual load. Maximum heart rate (HRmax) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) were determined. Capillary blood for LA determination was collectedbefore and three minutes after the end of the test. Full blood cell count, serum iron concentration and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were determined before and 10 minutes after the test. Values of biochemical parameters in blood serum were corrected using the hematocrit index. t-Student test was used to make statistical analysis.Results. Field hockey players covered a distance 2679.8 ± 450.6 metres at 13.7 ± 1.7 minutes. Sportsmen obtained values of HRmax 192.4 ± 7.3 beat/min and VO2max 53.6 ± 4.1 ml/min/kg after the treadmil running. LA concentration was significantly increased after the test (before test: 1.0 ± 0.2 mmol/l, after test: 8.2 ± 2.2 mmol/l, P<0.001). Serum iron concentration increased from 96.7 ± 27.1 to 110.0 ± 28.7 mg/dl (P<0.001) and TIBC from 382.5 ± 70.0 to 428.7 ± 63.8 mg/dl (P<0.05), respectively.Conclusions. Maximal exercise leads to significant changes of serum iron concentration, which accompany low increase in TIBC. were tested.
