Influence of grain processing in regard to serum metabolites and enzymes for finishing bull calves
Journal Title: Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences - Year 2011, Vol 20, Issue 4
Abstract
This study compared two grain processing methods that are widely used for beef cattle, grinding and steam pelleting, with respect to serum metabolic parameters: glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), serum urea nitrogen (SUN), total serum protein (TSP), albumin, L-lactate, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and amylase. Ten Belgian Blue bull calves were allotted randomly to each of two experimental groups: PF, fed pelleted concentrate, and GF, fed ground concentrate. During the 77-day study most parameters underwent significant variation in time, increasing only numerically serum values of total protein, albumin, AST and amylase, while serum glucose, NEFA and GGT decreased numerically. Statistically significant differences were found only between groups PF and GF for creatinine (higher in group PF, in relation with its greater average body weight) and urea nitrogen, which for unknown causes fluctuated in opposite directions in the two groups throughout most of the study and attributable to changes in ruminal protein digestion. Neither serum glucose nor L-lactate were affected by treatment of grains.

Effect of the gynosaponin on methane production and microbe numbers in a fungus-methanogenco-culture
This study investigated the effect of saponins gypenoside (gynosaponins) on methane production and microbe numbers in a co-culture of a fungus, Piromyces sp. F1, and a methanogen, Methanobrevibacter sp.. Two co-culture s...
Effects of some non-genetic factors on concentration of urea in milk in Polish Holstein-Fresian cows
The objective of this study was to estimate lactation curves of milk urea concentration for primiparous Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, milked in different months and air temperatures, using random regression test-day mod...
Egg specific gravity in improvement of hatchability in laying hens
The aim of the study was to assess the suitability of egg specific gravity (ESG) as an accompanying trait in estimation of the birds’ breeding value for hatchability. The study involved 3 generations of performance recor...
Effects of dietary phytic acid on digestibility of main nutrients and mineral absorption in mink (Mustela vison)
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of dietary phytic acid (IP6) on the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of main nutrients and apparent absorption of minerals in mink (Mustela vison). A basal...
Peripheral ghrelin inhibits feed intake through hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis-dependent mechanism in chicken
It is known that centrally injected ghrelin is an anorexigenic peptide in chicken. Its activity is not mediated by NPY/AgRP - producing neurons but through the corticosterone releasing hormone (CRH) - expressing neurons...
