Influence of Gravity Loading on the Ground Reaction Curve at Tunnel Crown Based on the Nonlinear Unified Strength Criterion
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 6, Issue 5
Abstract
This research effort, considers the true triaxial stress state and takes into account the effect of body forces due to the weight of the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) to develop a new semi-analytical solution describing for the induced stress field within the weak rock mass surrounding a circular tunnel. The solution approach is based on the generalized nonlinear unified strength criterion; by changing the effect of intermediate principal stress, new solutions based on different failure criteria, e.g. Hoek and Brown and Generalized Twin Shear Stress can be obtained. Based on this approach, a new Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) for tunnel’s crown is obtained. The new GRC, unlike the existing ones, contains a critical point which signifies the maximum displacement possible before loosening occurs. The new GRC is validated through standard examples and its significance in investigating stability is important in tunnel design.
