INFLUENCE OF THE SELECTED FILLERS ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE FRICTION MATERIALS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

The paper presents the influence of the selected fillers – solid lubricants on the physics-mechanics and the tribological properties of friction materials for brake pads for commercial vehicles. The composite materials were different in contents and the kind of solid lubricants added to the base material. There were added 2%, 4% and 8% the following solid lubricants: Sb2S3 (with a various content of metal), MoS2, FeS, MnS, Cu2S-FeS, lubricant on the base of the zinc sulphide, calcium stearate. All studies have been carried out on a Krauss Type RWDC 136B machine equipped with a special brake (described in Regulation 90 ECE, annex 8). The disc brake was made of grey iron. Wear test were conducted for 4 hours. Based on the carried out tests, it has been shown that the art and the quantity of the filler added to the basic material has an significant influence on the brake friction materials properties. It has been proved that the friction materials with an addition of molybdenum sulphide show a much higher wear resistance than friction materials without this lubricant.
