Influence of the surface height on the stability of one leg standing position in respect of difficulty grading

Abstract
In order to evaluate postural dynamics on an elevated surface and the dependence of that dynamics on the sequence of trials, we examined 13 subjects standing quietly at three different heights (15, 81 and 150 cm) in two tests. In the first test the subjects performed 20 s trials on platforms with increasing height, while in the second one, the platform height was gradually decreasing. During each trial, changes of the center of pressure (COP ) were measured in the saggital and frontal planes, and were used for calculating the COP stability markers like variability, mean velocity and postural viscosity. The main finding are lower values of mean velocity and different values of viscosity at each height during descending rather than ascending. It implies that height threat and the accompanying emotions affect the postural performance in such a way that the same tasks are more easily executed when performed in a sequence of decreasing difficulty.
