INFLUENCE OF ULTRASONIC IMPACT TREATMENT ON SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF AISI 321 STAINLESS STEEL

Abstract

The effects of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) on surface microrelief and microstructure of AISI 321austenitic stainless steel were studied. The specimen surfaces were severely deformed by an ultrasonic tool equipped with a seven-pin impact head supplied by a 0.3 kW ultrasonic generator and controlled by a computer-driven machine to form a regular surface microrelief and evenness of the surface structural state. The surface microrelief was examined using an optical 3D profilometer Leica DCM3D. The microstructural evolution of the surface layer was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results indicated that the UIT regime used leads to microstructure refinement, the surface and subsurface hardness increase (~450 and 275 HV, respectively) and compressive residual stresses (-400 MPa). Moreover, the UIT process leads to a formation of the regular/wavy surface microrelief with minimum surface roughness (Ra ~0.16 μm).
