Inguinal Canal Block for Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: Case Series

Abstract
We hypothesised that deposition of local anaesthesia in the inguinal canal or the 'Inguinal Canal Block' will provide effective analgesia in patients undergoing laparoscopic hernia repair. Thirty six patients received 10 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine with 1μg/Kg of either fentanyl or clonidine on the side operated. In our series, mean duration of analgesia in patients receiving clonidine was 9.47 ± 1.17 hours with lower NRS scores at 4 hrs as compared to 5.83 ± 0.85 hours in those receiving fentanyl (p=0.04). Inguinal canal block is an effective approach for analgesia in laparoscopic hernia repair.
